Brenda Houston: Alfred Shaheen Collection of wallpapers
Alfred Shaheen was the most creative and prolific Hawaiian manufacturer in the heyday of post-WWII fashion. Shaheen pioneered Hawai’i’s garment manufacturing industry by stretching beyond the limits imposed by the isolation of the Hawaiian Islands. During pre-statehood Hawai’i, a critical time in Hawai’i’s economic development, Shaheen built the most comprehensive textile printing, garment manufacturing, and retail company Hawai’i would ever see. Shaheen accomplished this feat through his vision, inventiveness, engineering brilliance, and unreserved commitment to authenticity and excellence.
Alfred Shaheen’s textile designs and fabrics are legendary and were inspired by Hawai’i, the South Pacific, and Asia. By studying their native designs and adapting them to textiles, Shaheen brought us such Hawaiian classics as the Pua Lani (Classic) Pareau, Tiare Tapa, and Joss Sticks handprints. Shaheen’s prints meld so beautifully with the lush, magical nature of Hawai’i, that his designs have become an integral part of the Hawaiian mystique. In recognition of his contributions to the State of Hawai’i, in July 2001, Shaheen was awarded Hawai’i’s Ka’Ahu No’eau Lifetime Achievement Award. In July 2006, Hawai’i’s premier newspaper, The Honolulu Star-Advertiser, included Alfred Shaheen among the 150 most important influences to impact social, economic, and cultural changes in Hawai’i from 1856 to 2006. In 2012, the U.S. Postal Service issued four postage stamps depicting Alfred Shaheen aloha shirts.
Alfred Shaheen’s vintage Hawaiian shirts, sundresses, sarongs, and fabrics are highly collectible and have become the subject of multiple museum exhibits. Please explore our site, where you will find images of the Shaheen operation during the ’50s and ’60s and learn more about Shaheen history and Shaheen’s original Surf ‘n Sand print plant, which took Shaheen from a small entrepreneur in the late-1940s to Hawai’i’s largest manufacturer of aloha wear by the mid-1950s.
Philomela Textiles: Bonnie Saland
BONNIE SALAND
MEET THE ARTIST
Bonnie Saland is a practicing artist and psychoanalyst based in Pasadena and The Sea Ranch, California. A free spirited exercise in investigation surfaces in every pattern she engineers. The compass is of her own making and guides her favorably through the fluidity of production. She weathers the ebbs of change and rides the flow of creation-in her own words, "the Sea is my true north."
The images comfort and instigate through memory and imagination alike. Experimenting with her own diverse visual language, Saland offers inventive interpretations of the universal themes of birth, survival, death, and regeneration. The subject is frequently felt like a faint, subtle suggestion in a pattern-a stirring within. Still, more often, her work beckons as a lighthearted reminder to connect with our own deep spirit.
Whether working in journal format on the road, or in her California studio space, Saland paints, cuts, pastes, recycles and repeats, incorporating traditional patterning, abstraction, and the poetic use of color in an ongoing reconfiguration. Her work is a salute to combining art and function, and living in creative installation. Philomela is a documentation of an abundant life, rooted in an appreciation for craftsmanship and an appetite for peppering joy and beauty throughout the everyday.

New Addition to C3 Design
C L Sterling was established in 2001 to produce a range of light fixtures for sale to architects and interior designers both domestically and abroad. The company is based in Niantic, Connecticut, USA. Prior to its organization the founders were involved for a number of years in both architecture and interior design with a primary focus on high end residential design. A great deal of this work required custom fabrication of site-specific light fittings, and as a direct result of this experience C L Sterling was established.
This expertise in producing a superior product for a discriminating market proved to be the key to the company’s immediate success within the US design community. From the beginning, the company has focused on quality, design, and customer service.
Identifying market needs and responding to client requests has driven the development of the product line. This has resulted in the addition of exterior fixtures to complement the existing line of interior lighting products. New introductions employ unusual materials in innovative ways.

Modern Metal Designs
Modern Metal Designs makes grilles and panels but some of the clever designers, out there, are coming up with other interesting uses for Annie's designs. In this case they used it for a headboard application. Also this would be good for residential as well as hospitality projects. Other uses have been for stair rails and raised floor applications. If you can think it up we can probably figure out how to do it. Reach out to daniel.tillman@c3design.info if you have one of those cool ideas.
